War of the wolf by Bernard Cornwell

Uhtred has finally become lord of Bebbanburg. Shortly afterwards, he’s already lured out of the castle on a mission to Mercia as Aethelstan is under siege in Ceaster. Meanwhile, the Norsh leader Skoll is advancing in Northumbria and he’s determinded to kill Uhtred and his son-in-law Sygtriggr to become king of Northumbria. In Wessex, King Edward has added Mercia to ‘Englaland’ after the death of his sister Aethelflaed. Now that his third wife has also given him a son, the question remains who will inherit the throne after his death.

This is book 11 in the Saxon series or the Last kingdom series and we’ve come a long way. In the first book Wessex was the last kingdom of the Saxons. Now, Northumbria is the last pagan kingdom.

If you thought it was over for Uhtred now that he’s back at Bebbanburg then you were wrong. In The war of the wolf we fall back on the well-known recipe in which Uhtred is stuck between his oath to the Saxons and his family ties to the Danes.

A new enemy rises who mercilessly invades Jorvik and strikes down one of the main characters. Uhtred is out for revenge, but must also wade his way through the political waters of Mercia and Wessex in the meantime.

This book comes again with a great cast of supporting characters: Finan, Berg, Osferth, Mus, Ieremais and a woman who Uhtred nicknames ‘the squirrel’ 😅. This is a Cornwell as it should be with Uhtred at his best as a warrior, friend and father. Two more books to go.

Rating: 4 out of 5.
